Bradford artist David Hockney is spearheading a campaign for more government cash for regional museums and galleries.
The push comes as Hockney's massive picture Le Plongeur is re-hung at the city's Cartwright Hall following a tour of Europe.
The picture will be the Gallery until mid-July then will stay in Bradford to support the city's bid to become European Capital of Culture.
Hockney's photo montage Pearlblossom: One Landscape Many Views is the basis for the district's bid for Capital status.
Hockney has joined other world-famous British artists in asking the government for a major investment for undervalued regional museums.
Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford councils arts boss, says: "Without lottery money and other grants for specific pieces we are unable to buy major works by artists of international repute.
"Hockney has said that many of the influences that formed his life and career were at local museums in Bradford in Leeds."
Bradford and other Yorkshire councils have applied for £14 million from the government to support their museums and galleries.
